La Cobijada: The Black Virgin
La Cobijada is an iconic figure of Vejer de la Frontera (province of Cádiz), tied to the traditional manto y saya costume. This black outfit covered the woman entirely, leaving only one eye visible, creating an aura of mystery. Of Castilian origin, it dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries and symbolizes Vejer’s cultural identity—so much so that a statue pays tribute to her near the former Jewish quarter today.
After several revival attempts—particularly in the 1930s—the tradition was relaunched sustainably in 1976. Today, the Cobijada of Vejer de la Frontera is celebrated during the town’s patron saint festivities, when the cobijada mayor and the cobijada infantil are elected as official ambassadors of this custom at various ceremonial events.
